Oceanic Servers

May 16, 2008

Australian and New Zealand players will be able to get into the WAR simultaneously with North American and European players when Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning releases in Fall 2008.

In addition, WAR will also feature dedicated servers in Australia, ensuring the best game play experience possible for enthusiastic Australian and New Zealand players.

WAR Oceanic FAQ:

Where will the server be located?

The game server will be located on mainland Australia and service New Zealand, Singapore, and other surrounding South East Asian territories.

When will the server be available?

Australian, North American, and European servers will all launch simultaneously with the client available throughout the supported territories mentioned above.

What are the benefits to having a local, regional server?

A local server means reduced latency and packet loss. These advantages allow for better performance in Realm vs. Realm battles and an overall improved game experience with limited lag and a more responsive environment. In addition there will be a higher population during peak Oceanic play times allowing players to better coordinate their in-game efforts.

Will Oceanic players be able to play on North American servers?

Absolutely, players from both North America and the Oceanic region will play using the same client giving them access to both North American and Oceanic servers. In addition servers will be listed with regional tags and able to be sorted by ping rate allowing players to select the best server for them quickly and easily.

What server hardware will be used for the Australian Server?

The game will be hosted on the same server technology used for North American servers.

MBJ on Beta

April 16, 2008

MBJ sums up the current outlook of the WAR beta in a QA session:

Question # 7 – Since you just whacked a bunch of inactive beta testers, are more people going to be invited into the beta than you planned?

Answer # 7 – Yes. When we move to the next phase of beta testing a few things will happen. First, we are going to invite all the people who have won a slot into the beta through contests or through a Warhammer event. Again, winners have to meet all of our eligibility and admittance requirements. If you do that, you'll be invited into the next stage. Second, in the next stage of beta testing we will be inviting a lot more people (hopefully several thousand more) to join the beta and now that we have some extra slots, well add more than we originally planned. And after, well who knows...

Dark Regiment

April 09, 2008

Looking for a guild? Check out Dark Regiment. Phantom and Rollins, two of Dark Regiment's leaders, talk about Dark Regiment, recruitment, and their plans for WAR.

Me:
What one feature of WAR is Dark Regiment most looking forward to?

Phantom:
Gotta be Mythic's next vision of RvR, lots of DaoC vets here ready for something fresh, and ready to kill others.

Rollins:
PvP. We enjoy exerting our dominance upon others. Enough said.

We also discuss important matters such as the best Transformer and who would win a fight between Godzilla and Superman. Superman seems to be a strong favorite.

Beta Associations

February 07, 2008

James had this to say about the various beta associations and eligibility over at WHA:

What does this mean exactly? Well we have a number of eligibility requirements that must be fulfilled, these can be different depending on what we're currently looking for.

We will never share that criteria publicly as to ensure that we are as accurate as possible when we pull a list of invites.

Let me be perfectly clear when I say: I will never say "X Group will definitely get in" just as I did not above. We try to get as many priority invites in as possible, but it will never be everyone from that pool. We can only take testers who are eligible. Do not assume you meet these requirements.

We will continue to sweep the priority invite group each time we invite, anyone who is eligible at that time will have priority on the list. That is the best we can do to ensure that everyone who gets into the beta can be a productive member of the testing process.

Until System Requirements for release are announced we will never state minimum system reqs.

Often times due to optimization it's higher than it generally would be at launch. But more specifically we invite different system rankings based on our needs at any given time.

DevChat Log

January 31, 2008

Mograth attended, asked a question, and procured a transcript of the WarCry DevChat. Someone give this guy a medal.

SD|Skwisgaar: About collision detection, how potent will it be? I’ve noticed in some videos that people were
almost not hindered at all. Ex: Will we be able to maintain a tightly knit formation,
say, a shieldwall, which would be effectively the blocking enemy players at strategic chokepoints like hallways and gates?
<[WAR]Gersh> Players will be able to Push through Collision but only after a period of time (A few seconds) this is to prevent AFK greifing etc
<[WAR]Gersh> however collision will work very well for stopping or slowing an assault esspecially if your blocking a doorway
<[WAR]Gersh> that is why we added knockback to the game =)

WAR-Mondes Interview

January 30, 2008

Josh Drescher hard at work as usual. This interview comes from Mondes Persistants.

What will happen when a player logs out in a zone, which is afterwards being conquered by the hostile faction? Will I wake up amongst a wild horde of bloodthirsty Orcs and get my (..pardon me..) ass violently beaten up?

Depending on the situation, that’s certainly possible – though it won’t happen in things like Scenarios.

PC Gamer

January 28, 2008

The European edition of PC Gamer has a gnarly little article about WAR this month.

Josh firmly believes that Warhammer, thanks to it's ultra-competitive focus, can take online gaming further into the mainstream. "I think we're going to see a shift away from online gaming being this underground weird thing that people do, and it'll become a lot more like what sports are in the western world. Realm vs realm can give people that factional rallying point, something that's bigger than their individual experience."

1st and 2nd

January 22, 2008

MMO-Gamer has a very long review of their first and second impressions on Warhammer Online.

The more I played, the more I saw that while there were many similarities to WoW, there were just as many differences. The graphics, while admittedly drawn from the same vein, are darker, the textures having a certain grit to them, lending the game a more somber atmosphere. I didn’t see one purple tree or pink striped tiger the entire time.

Josh D. Interviews

January 17, 2008

Mr. Six Billion has been busy. The first interview comes from TenTonHammer, the second from MMOsite:

MMOsite: Many players hope that melee classes can have a skill like "charge" which can help them get close to the enemy rapidly. Do you have any plan on adding such sort of skill for the melee classes?

Josh Drescher: All of our melee DPS careers have the ability to "run down" an opponent. This is essentially a second "sprint" ability that they have that allows them to catch up to someone who breaks away from a fight and tries to run away. This ability differs from standard "charge" abilities in a couple of major ways.

First of all, it's not a super-fast ability that moves you forward a large distant almost instantly. It makes you faster than your target, but it doesn't teleport you over to them.

Second, you control your character's movement the whole time. Because we have player collision in WAR, we needed the melee DPS player to have control over how they move through the world. Otherwise, they'd fire off that ability and either bounce off of an enemy nearby or jump past them accidentally.

Stop by the Greenskin and cast your vote.

“What exactly are The Greenys,” you ask? Let me tell you!
The Greenys is an annual awards ceremony not unlike the Emmys or Oscars but instead of showcasing television and film, The Greeny Awards promote the best Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning community sites in five major categories (from the past year). These are sites that share lots of useful information and provide interesting discussion material for rabid WAR fans!

Rather than prescribe arbitrary criteria and risk showing favoritism, I’ve opened nominations and voting to WAR fans everywhere.

WarCry #11

December 18, 2007

WarCry has part 11 of their continuing series of WAR interviews. Nothing new, but always good to get that daily dose of WAR.

WarCry: Players always say they want individuality, but you guys also talk a lot about silhouetting so that others can immediately identify the class just by the look. How do you make sure someone still looks like their class, but is also a unique snowflake in the eyes of the player behind the wheel?

EA Mythic: The colossal amount of armor that the artists have created for each career clearly shows an increase in "bad-assery" as a player progresses through the game. This armor is still definitively "of that career" and preserves the classic GW silhouettes of that career. There's also plenty of extra "hats" and "shoulders" to create extra diversity. Kudos should be given to the artists for coming up with so much armor that is instantly career-recognizable.

The war in WAR

December 06, 2007

This MMORPG.com article flew under my radar, but has some interesting information about RvR, zone control, and king capturing. Some of the tidbits:

MMORPG.com: Besides bragging rights, what benefits does control of the map convey to the army that holds it?

Brian Wheeler: Lots! We can't disclose all of the treats you'll get, but I'll share a few with you. When you control a map your morale will instantly shoot up to 100%, you'll get a buff that increases your damage output, you'll be granted a hefty chunk of Renown, and to promote the sense of absolute chaos and bedlam...well...we'll save that one for later...

MMORPG.com: There has been some information about capturing the King of a city (we presume an NPC) but we'd like to know more about the consequences of that action?

Brian Wheeler: At this point, the killing/capturing of a King is slated to temporarily give both offensive and defensive bonuses to the winning Realm (Order or Destruction) when fighting again a member of an opposing army (Dwarf, Chaos, etc.) that just lost its leader. This is designed to help spur on that racial hatred we want in WAR. If you're a Chaos or Dark Elf player, you'll get these bonuses against Dwarfs when the Greenskins kill/capture Thorgrim Grudgebearer. As for the losers, it is time to rally the troops for a fight to win back your honor!

Beta Update #5

December 06, 2007

Another dish of weekly goodness from the WAR Herald (click for full story). Among this week's features is a quick and informative Q&A about keeps:

Will the keeps be attackable without siege?
Yes, players will be able to break open the keep doors, battle the guards, fight their way to the keep lord, and try to capture the keep.

Will Keeps change in appearance based upon which race controls them?
In future patches (pre-launch), the appearance of the keep will change to reflect that the enemy realm has captured it. At this time, we are not planning to entirely replace the keep with a new structure with different geometry. So, an Empire keep captured by Destruction will still look like an Empire keep, but it will change to look like it's been under siege and show some signs of its new owners.

Will there be NPC guards and a captain to kill rather than a "run up and click the flag" we see in other games?
There will definitely be more to capturing the keep than just interacting with an object or entering an area. There will be guards and a "lord", with the numbers of guards present based on factors players from both realms can affect. More details will be released closer to Beta re-opening.

Will there be non-typical types of keeps? (i.e. ships, trains, mountains)
At this point, we aren't planning on using anything that deviates too far from a "keep" style structure.

Will keeps have multiple levels and if so, will they use ladders or stairs?
The keeps will have several floors of combat space. Both the keeps and the outer walls will use stairs or ramps, with no ladders to be found.

Will Battlefield Objectives play a part in the keep system?
Yes, there will be connections between the BOs and the keeps. Sorry folks, this is another one that we have to say "more details to follow later".

The update also includes a more in depth look at the Inevitable City and Career Mastery.

A New Face

December 04, 2007

Robert Mull greets the community for the first of many times to come from the WAR Herald:

Greetings All,

I’m Robert Mull, the new Community Relations Director for EA Mythic. I oversee the work our team of Community Coordinators do for Warhammer Online (James Nichols), Dark Age of Camelot (Missy Hatch and Joanne Laroche) and Ultima Online (Jeremy Dalberg). They are a great team and I am lucky to have inherited them.

As a gamer who got his start in MMOs with the Ultima Online beta, being allowed to support the same community that made that game so enjoyable to me is a real pleasure and I feel like I have come full circle. Since then a decade has passed and I have played countless MMOs. A few of these became part of my daily routine for years as I worked to found guilds, build cities, run player-events, engage in pvp conflicts, roleplay, and be an active member of the gaming community. While the games have changed over the years, the real draw for me has always been the people. A strong well-supported community makes good games great.

Prior to coming to EA Mythic, I worked at Wizards of the Coast supporting brands such as Avalon Hill, Axis & Allies, Dreamblade, Duel Masters and other products. I learned many lessons there that I have brought with me to EA Mythic, but first and foremost is that you have to be honest and open with your community.

In the coming months you will be hearing much more from me. I want to continue and extend the reputation EA Mythic has built for integrity, honesty and quality in community and customer support. Our job here is to be the voice of the community inside EA Mythic and the voice of the people working hard at EA Mythic to the community. The Community Relations team is a feedback loop and our goal is making the community better, day by day. I, for one, take that job very seriously and enjoy it immensely.

I look forward to talking to you all on the boards and at Road Trips, conventions and other public events.

- Bob

Not all invitees were emailed it seems, so login to the WAR beta center with your account and check the status. Who knows, maybe you're a winner. If you are a winner, I challenge you to a fight out in the backyard right now. Street Fighter II rules apply. Haduken spamming is legal!
